September 10, 2006 (Press Release) --
P.F. Sloan, "Sailover" (HighTone) ***1/2
Music fans will long remember 2006 as the year of the comeback. Perhaps none, though, is more dramatic than P.F. Sloan's.
The author of "Eve of Destruction," "You Baby" and "Secret Agent Man" wrote 10 new songs for "Sailover," his first new album in 30 years. The songs are no doubt the product of a mind that's very much in tune with the ills of modern America. Plagued by mental illness and sick of the b.s. of the record business, Sloan would have remained the proverbial dropout if not for the persuasive personality of Jon Tiven, who produced this disc and plays guitar and keyboards.
While the new material -- most notably "Violence" and the title track -- holds its own, what really stands out are Sloan's reworked versions of classics such as the great '60s protest rocker "Eve of Destruction," with Buddy Miller as guest vocalist. Yes, the Eastern world is still explodin', and we needed Sloan to weigh in again. Speaking of which, check out Sloan's new "Where Were You When I Needed You," with Felix Cavaliere on vocals.
