Matthew Peschong is a student of Minnesota State University Mankato and he had it his right as a student to turn the problems of the
social networking website "Facebook" to the students using the portal. The site he created was www.BanFacebook.com. Peschong uses the site to explain to students the relevancy of the Facebook's changes, helping students understand Facebook's controversial privacy policy,
and allow students to share videos and thoughts on the site.
Facebook is using your information as a means of surveillance and information collection to sell to advertisers who, they hope, will be better able to sell promote you products and services you don’t need.
According to Facebook’s privacy policy “Facebook also collects information about you from other sources, such as newspapers and instant messaging services. This information is gathered regardless of your use of the Web Site.” Although Facebook is assuring us that their ‘next’ privacy policy will not influded a portion that allows them to collect your information the reality is that nothing has yet been done. The reality is that they have collected millions of current and former Facebook user’s information to sell for a lifetime.
There is also some speculation on whether or not Facebook has been “selling your information to the CIA.” In addition, the current Facebook privacy policy allows Facebook the right to sell your information to private companies. “We may share your information with third parties including responsible companies with which we have a relationship.” That list of private companies amounts to several hundred. If Facebook, as the alledge, do not sell our information then why would they have that clause in their privacy policy in the first place?
Although Facebook has long denied the alligations that they use your information to sell to third parties and that Facebook does not have such ability, there are people outside of Facebook who have been able to do just that with hacking. As part of a Facebook privacy assignment, a couple MIT students were recently able to download over 70,000 Facebook profiles into neat customizable charts and graphs to use for marketing research. If you believe you’re safe on Facebook, think again. Because of Facebook’s flexible privacy policy the company can do what they wish with your personal information.
