Santa Barbara, CA - August 30, 2006 -- Officially opened as a hotel on February 2, 1918, El Encanto will close on September 9, 2006 for an extensive enhancement and restoration program by Orient-Express Hotels, Trains & Cruises. Re-opening date is forecasted for late 2007 early 2008.
Acquired by Orient-Express in November of 2004, the company has spent the last year-and-half in the planning process with historians, architects, structural engineers, designers and landscapers to ensure that the renovation program honors the past while also creating a luxury hotel that complements its existing collection of award winning properties which include such notables as the Copacabana Palace in Rio, Hotel Caruso in Italy, and The Venice-Simplon Orient-Express Train.
Founded in 1976 when the company acquired Hotel Cipriani in Venice, Orient-Express owns or has investments in 49 businesses: 39 highly individual hotels, two restaurants, six tourist trains and two river cruise operations, located in 25 countries worldwide. Perched above the red tile roofs of Santa Barbara, California and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, El Encanto Hotel has been an integral part of Santa Barbara's social, cultural and architectural heritage for over 93 years. Originally intended to house students and faculty from the neighboring State Normal School in 1913, expansion of the original four cottages and conversion to a hotel took place in 1918 with the first dinner hosted on December 31, 1917 with the official opening on February 2, 1918. Over the years, it has been a premier retreat catering to celebrities from the golden days of Hollywood, including Hedy Lamarr, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard.
The Renovation program will include the exterior restoration and new interior styling of the hotels nine California Craftsman buildings that date from 1911 to 1918 and ten Spanish Colonial Revival cottages that date from the 1920s; the building of five new cottages in either the Spanish Colonial or Craftsman style; and the rebuilding of the main building using many of its original period lements including windows, hardware, siding and flooring. The overall gardens will also be enhanced with walkways, various plantings and the introduction of herb, reading and strolling gardens.
Upon re-opening, the seven acre property with its lush gardens and spectacular views of Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands will feature 91 rooms/suites, a fine dining restaurant with tiered dining terrace, a lounge, a zero-edge swimming pool, a tennis court, four meeting/event rooms, and a boutique six treatment room spa.
