The United States Can Achieve Zero Oil Imports

The U.S. can achieve zero oil imports, now at 13 million bbl/day, by doing vehicle improvements, a new train system, and making oil from coal (with no additional coal mining), said Lloyd Weaver, President, LEW Holdings LLC. He says his company has much of the new invention needed to achieve this goal.

Weaver said bullet trucks can more than double tractor-trailer fuel efficiency saving 1 million bbl/day, bullet trains can save 0.8 million bbl/day, better automatic transmissions 1.7 million bbl/day, and HCCI engines can greatly reduce diesel emissions although they don�t save oil. He said if gasifiers can become mainstream technology, they could revolutionize coal power from 32% average efficiency now to IGCC 52 % (per DOE) saving 400 million tons coal annually. According to Weaver, that saved coal can use the same gasifier to produce up to 3 million bbl/day of syncrude oil substitute. He said when fully integrated into these economic sectors, these changes add up to 6.5 million bbl/day, halving oil imports. But if U.S. automakers would follow suit in the same vain as his bullet truck, i.e. high streamlining, use diesel engines (eventually HCCI engines), low rolling resistance tires, and best transmissions (plus some plug-in hybrid), he said they would be making automotive products efficient enough to save the remainder, eliminating oil imports.

�We can make this happen,� said Weaver, �but we need to revolutionize these sectors to create entirely new big businesses, and auto companies must dramatically change as well.� Weaver said this puts the U.S. on the path to energy sustainability as well as dramatically reducing emissions.
