September 20, 2006 (Press Release) --
This is perhaps the creepiest celebrity story of the year -- yet undeniably a sign of our times.
Anna Nicole Smith is being enriched by the tragic death of her 20-year-old son Daniel by selling the rights to pictures of herself with Daniel and her newborn daughter, shortly before Daniel's untimely demise in that Bahamas hospital room.
I know, I know. Smith's people told the N.Y. Daily News that some of the reported $600,000 the TV personality and her photo agent Getty Images are collecting will go toward a yet-to-be-determined ''memorial'' to Daniel. However, I can't help but feel weird about all this -- even as we, like many other media outlets around the world, are today reproducing on this page at least one of the images.
In the final analysis, the young man's mother is being paid for a snapshot or two of her kid -- taken just before he left this world.
Obviously, an argument can be made that as long as people are willing to pay for such things, Anna Nicole -- rather than some faceless paparazzo -- should be the one collecting the cash.
Even so, it's still creepy!
LOTS TO SHARE: One thing is for certain: Brothers Nick and Aaron Carter have a lot in common -- and not just genes, musical talent and fame. Aaron has just popped the question and become engaged to Playboy Playmate and ex-Miss Teen USA Kari Ann Peniche, a girl his big brother previously dated. The younger Carter, 18, proposed in front of 200 people at a Playboy event in Las Vegas Saturday. The couple plan to wed within six months.
• Meanwhile, it's too bad Aaron and Nick's ''House of Carters'' TV reality show is already in the can. Aaron's surprise engagement to his sibling's ex would have added a nice twist! The new series, debuting Oct. 2 on E!, reunites Backstreet Boy Nick with Aaron and their three sisters -- all back living together in the same house.
