TORTOISE
Taking stock of a much-acclaimed career pushing the boundaries of art- (please don't call it "post-") rock, the Chicago instrumental combo celebrates the recent release of its three-disc box set "A Lazarus Taxon" with what are sure to be two steamy performances at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, 7 and 10 tonight. Tickets, $18. Call (773) 276-3600. --Jim DeRogatis
AMY MILLAN
In recent years, the Canadian singer-songwriter has spent time as the vocalist for the chamber-pop band Stars, as well as lending her talent to the indie collective Broken Social Scene. Now she steps out on her own with "Honey from the Tombs," a collection of Americana tunes that meet somewhere between pop and old-style country music. Damien Jurado opens, 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Park West, 322 W. Armitage. Tickets, $15. Call (312) 559-1212. --MH
EDIE CAREY
Carey may have started out wanting to be a doctor but she found her true calling in music. Her pop-folk songs are smart tales of love, life and longing. Carey opens for Anne Heaton at 8 p.m. Thursday at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport. Tickets, $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Call (773) 525-2508. --MH
MICHELE MALONE
The blues rocker, who is equally at home on soulful ballads, is touring behind her new album, "Sugarfoot." The poetic songwriter has a touch of Lucinda Williams about her on songs that speak skillfully to the heart and mind. Also on the bill: Marshall Chapman and Tina Schlieske. At 8 p.m. Wednesday at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport. Tickets, $12. Call (773) 525-2508. --MH
