September 29, 2006: Today the Center for Health Justice sharply criticized Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for vetoing a bill that would allow California’s prisoners access to HIV prevention tools, including condoms. AB 1677 was sponsored by Assembly member Paul Koretz (D – West Hollywood).
“We are frustrated and angered that the Governor has missed his chance to address the public health crisis of HIV transmission in California’s prisons and to help stop the spread of HIV. AB 1677 offered the opportunity for California to be a leader in the nation, and to heed nationwide calls to improve HIV prevention in prisons. Instead he stands with the Family Values Coalition alone in opposing this cost-effective common-sense approach to preventing the spread of HIV among California’s most vulnerable populations,” said Policy & Advocacy Director Mary Sylla. “Not only would this law have saved lives, it would have saved the taxpayers of California millions in healthcare costs associated with caring for those living with HIV and AIDS.”
As the largest in-custody condom provider in the state, the Center for Health Justice plans to work with legislators to draft and pass another bill to improve HIV prevention in prisons in the upcoming legislative session.
THE CENTER FOR HEALTH JUSTICE runs the largest condom distribution program in prisons or jails in California. Currently we distribute to gay, bisexual, and transgendered male prisoners in Los Angeles County jail. Started as CorrectHELP, the agency changed its name to reflect the scope of its other programs, the formal birth of a Policy & Advocacy Department, and the broad and growing movement for adequate access to care for prisoners nationwide. THE CENTER FOR HEALTH JUSTICE may be reached on the web at www.HEALTHJUSTICE.net, or by calling 323/822-3830.
