October 1, 2006 (Press Release) --
Staff moves at Marriott
At Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Aaron Thielen and Andy Hite have been named co-artistic directors, after serving as associate directors there since the summer of 2005. At the other big suburban musical theater venue, Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace, William Osetek will serve as artistic director and will stage the upcoming revival of "The King and I."
'Volver' gets Oscar push
Pedro Almodovar's comic drama ''Volver'' has been chosen to represent Spain among movies vying to be candidates for the best foreign film Oscar. ''Volver,'' which stars Penelope Cruz, beat out Agustin Diaz Yanes' ''Alatriste'' and Manuel Huerga's ''Salvador.'' The decision was announced Thursday by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. (It opens Nov. 22 in Chicago.) On Wednesday, the Swedish Film Institute announced that it had selected ''Falkenberg Farewell,'' a movie about five childhood friends' last summer in their hometown, as the country's entry for best foreign film Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce its foreign film candidates Jan. 23.
Opera chief extends contract
Houston Grand Opera music director Patrick Summers has signed a five-year contract extension. Summers, who is credited with turning the opera company into a world-class ensemble, became music director in 1998. His new contract, announced Wednesday, will keep him as music director until at least 2014. ''Houston is my home, and as a citizen interested in the cultural life of our city, I am honored to play a role in its future,'' he said.
NBC riffs on Gibson incident
Art will imitate celebrity life on NBC's ''Law & Order.'' In an episode that begins filming this week, Chevy Chase guest stars as a TV celebrity who spews religious epithets after being pulled over by police for drunken driving. The episode, titled ''In Vino Veritas,'' is scheduled to air Nov. 3. Although there are similarities between the episode and actor-director Mel Gibson's recent legal troubles, a spokesman for NBC noted that the long-running ''Law & Order'' series ''is completely fiction.'' Gibson pleaded no contest Aug. 17 to a charge of drunken driving in Malibu, Calif.
