Los Angeles -- Pre-production interest is high in the Lou Di Giorgio film "Crossing Borders," not only for its potential as an entertaining romantic comedy, but also because many see it as the right message at the right time to inspire peace in the Middle East.
"The entire world, not just the 'Western World,' is ready for a peaceful resolution to the conflicts in the Middle East," said Di Giorgio, producer of the film.
"It is a film which should help calm down, and bring a more positive attitude toward Muslim and Jewish cultures, and finally some hope. But, more deeply, it points out the failure of the U.S. government and the incapacity of the U.N. to solve the problem. Any solution will have to come from 'ordinary' people, as history show us in places like India, Portugal, and others. Otherwise we may face what the Bible said in the Apocalypse: from Jerusalem only stones will be left," said Di Giorgio.
Starring roles have been offered to Antonio Banderas, Natalie Portman, George Clooney, Danny DeVito, Jim Carrey, and Omar Sharif. Negotiations are underway with the Yari Film Group, and distribution worldwide by Universal.
"Everyone we show the screenplay to wants to be a part of it. They all see the great potential this film has to help inspire peace," said Di Giorgio who is traveling to scout locations for filming.
"Crossing Borders" is a satirical comedy about Jewish and Arab lifestyles and culture. A Jewish girl and an Palestinian boy meet, fall in love, and break down the barriers between their two cultures bringing happiness not only to themselves, but to the world around them.
Not just another Romeo and Juliette story of how love conquers all, Di Giorgio's film is an accurate depiction of how people of different cultures can still find commonality and unity in purpose for a common goal -- peace and happiness.
"Jewish and Arab parents have the same desires and goals. They want to raise their children in a world of peace without the daily fear of conflict and war," said Di Giorgio. "The desire for peace is strong, and when the people see this film they will realize that peace must come from them, not from politicians. The film shows that peace is not a fantasy, but it is a reality that we all want."
Set as a romantic comedy in the year 2016, an island community where weapons are banned is created for Jews and Palestinians who are refugees of the war and want to live in peace. This sets the stage for a Jewish girl, Hannah, and Aladdin, a Palestinian boy, to meet and fall in love. The story provides understanding of the cultures involved, while offering humor without resorting to negativism or degrading others. "The hardest part was to write a 'politically correct' screenplay, without offending anybody. What happened with the Pope recently is exactly what we tried to avoid. We certainly do not want another excuse from "Al Queida" to attack us as well," said Di Giorgio.
