Spokane, WA. 9/27/06 – Revised edition of Mike and a Lynx Named Kitty, a children's book by Mike Kerr, was recently released. Guest author of Native America Calling, Mike shares his Alaskan childhood.

Mike, who lived most of the adventures found in this touching book about growing up in a different time and place, says of his boyhood, "Back then you always knew what was right and what was wrong. You learned to live with nature. When I was a child, you could drink from any clear stream without fear that it was contaminated with man-made toxins, e-coli or parasites. The water was purified by nature – running over and through rocks and gravel was enough."
Some of his fondest memories are that "Wildlife was plentiful. You could watch it out your window. You could hunt and fish when you needed food. There was enough open forest to sustain everyone, whether man or beast. You could camp in the wilderness for free, and campers were respectful of the wilderness and each other. You left only footprints behind. Small children learned to survive in the wilderness at an early age, had great respect for Mother Nature, and knew what to do in any emergency."
Society was much different, too. "There was little to fear from other people, and children were encouraged to go out on their own. Today, we have to teach them to fear everything. Our campgrounds are crowded and abused. The joy in the wilderness has been ruined."
Mike has been a guest author on Native America Calling, is the subject of several local newspaper articles, and loves to share his experiences about his boyhood in Alaska in the 1940s.
