October 6, 2006 (Press Release) --
It’s up there in lights, and it doesn’t shine any brighter than this... Scorsese, Dicaprio, Nicholson, Damon, Wahlberg... The first two names are more than enticing, hell even just one of them would warrant a look in. But this is a seriously good reason to get excited about a movie, and carry one's derriere over to a picture house come the weekend.
Scorsese treads on familiar ground as he dips his... lens into the gangster genre once again, but for what promises to be the ultimate cat and mouse game. Irish mafia meets the Boston Police as the infiltrators become the hunted. The Departed is a remake of the phenomenally successful stylish Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs.
The Departed is set in South Boston, where state police is waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Based on a powerful Irish mafia figure placing a selection of his youngest, brightest men into the Massachusettes Police Academy as cadets. Their purpose: To gradually rise within the ranks of the city's police department, and serve as the eyes and ears of their boss. Unbeknownst to them simultaneously a young cadet was assigned with the equally dangerous (possibly more perilous) task of infiltrating the Irish syndicate headed by mob kingpin Costello (Nicholson). One cadet, Colin Sullivan (Damon) is a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, fast rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. While undercover cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate quickly gains Costello's confidence, and finds his professional duties blurred with his current state.
