October 8, 2006 (Press Release) --
Consider the Cheetah Girls a modern day, all-female version of the Monkees.
The musical group began life as characters in a series of books by Deborah Gregory, found new life in two movies on the Disney Channel and now three of the actresses make the leap from the small screen to the concert stage tonight at the Allstate Arena.
We chatted with Adrienne Bailon (Chanel), Kiely Williams (Aqua) and Sabrina Bryan (Dorinda) about the challenges of taking a fictitious band and making it real.
Q: When you perform, are you performing as the characters you play onscreen?
Kiely Williams: No, we're actually performing as ourselves.
Adrienne Bailon: And we're performing live.
Q: Do you think because the Cheetah Girls started off as fictional characters that people don't take your music seriously?
KW: We have had some difficulty getting people to realize we are a singing group. We sing, we dance and we act. That's something to be proud of more than anything.
Sabrina Bryan: There will probably always be the question, "Can you really do all three?" The only way to convince people that we're capable of doing it is to just go out there and do it.
AD: We were cast because we can do all three, though.
SB: And I think our fans are expecting us to do all three in concert. And we do.
KW: We don't want to be labeled as successful because of TV. We're trying to do more with this. We have a wide variety of fans. Some of them have never seen the movies or read the books and they just like us because we sing positive, uplifting music.
