October 16, 2006 (Press Release) --
Kim Jong Il, the North Korean dictator with the big specs, hasn't gotten this much attention since he had a big fat co-starring role in Matt Stone and Trey Parker's Team America.
OK, he was only a puppet, and he didn't make it to the end of the movie, but I'm betting he didn't mind the exposure, even if it wasn't exactly a flattering portrait. You see, Kim loves the cinema. He's even written a book called On the Art of Cinema. Doesn't this quote make it sound as though he's on the right track to head a studio? "A film which merely aims to make a profit by showing off the stars' faces cannot be real art." Didn't Sumner say that to Tom?
Or how about "A film with an untidy plot cannot grip the audience and define their emotional response." Kim, you've got it! I've seen a few of those lately.
The book is available on Amazon, and I'm not sure how much of the $27.50 price goes to the author. I'll leave you with one reader review: "While Jong's theory on extracting socially realistic acting from kidnapped Japanese soap opera stars was helpful in my latest project, Jong's technical work is so stunning that this book is merely a footnote to an awesome contribution to world cinema, if by world cinema you mean North Korean cinema."
