October 21, 2006 (Press Release) --
He may be used to dealing with vicious vampires in Blade, but that's nothing compared to Wesley Snipes' latest fight: taking on the Internal Revenue Service. A federal grand jury in Florida has indicted Snipes on tax fraud and conspiracy charges after a four-year investigation by the IRS, which concluded that the actor failed to file a return in 1999, tried to get $11.7 million in taxes refunded for 1996 and 1997 by claiming he did not owe taxes and submitted $13 million in fake checks to pay for taxes he did owe. Snipes also filed an amendment to his 1997 return that includes a change inserted in the signature statement — that change ties him to a pair of tax-evasion promoters, says The New York Times, who've already been the subject of litigation by the Justice Department for leading a movement that claims most Americans are not required to pay taxes. And while most of us would probably be ready to jump on that bandwagon, Snipes, who has several movie projects in the works, including a co-starring role with Don Cheadle in director Danny Glover's biopic Toussaint (about Haitian Revolution leader Toussaint L'Ouverture), may become the poster boy for why we shouldn't. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 30 years in prison.
