OUR REVIEW
by Dave White
Who's in It: Alison Lohman, Maria Bello, Tim McGraw
The Basics: It's the big sister version of last year's "girl + horse = true luv 4-eva" movie, Dreamer. And it's just as heart-stomping. She wants a horse, she gets a horse, she trains the free-spirited animal, there's conflict, symbolism and, well, I won't spoil it.
What's the Deal? You think you know what you're going to see when you go to a movie like this, and you do get the expected. But it's smarter and better than that, too, hitting all the notes you know, but making you feel like you're seeing this kind of thing for the first time. And you'll cry. Because it ain't a "girl + horse" movie without the crying.
I Vote for More Movies and Less Music: McGraw makes bland, soccer-mom country music but is a better actor than you'd have ever guessed he could be. He was good in Friday Night Lights, and handles himself well here, too. Did that sound too surprised? It wasn't meant to.
Why the Name Flicka Sounds Familiar: It's based on the 1941 novel My Friend Flicka (updated and feminized, because boys and horses just don't mean the same thing) that became a 1943 movie of the same name. In 1955, it was a TV show.
She Goes to that 90210 High School With Gabrielle Carteris: Lohman plays a 16-year-old. She is 27.
