October 23, 2006 (Press Release) --
Customs officials at Dhaka international airport stopped Mrs. Morshed Khan, wife of the outgoing foreign minister of Bangladesh, while she was trying to skip huge amount of import taxes on luxury items she brought from Singapore.
According to Bengali language daily Naya Diganta, Mrs. Khan arrived from Singapore with goods worth a few million Taka and was attempting to skip the customs area along with her daughter. But, the customs officials at Dhaka international airport challenged them and asked to open the luggage. At this stage, angry Mrs. Morshed Khan told the customs officers, “how dare you are, don’t you know I am the wife of the foreign minister?” The customs officials replied, “Yes madam we know, and also know that you are not above the law of the country”. She (Mrs. Khan) started shouting inside the customs hall, while the customs officials continued to open and inspect each of her luggages. Later, Bangladeshi customs officials collected TK. 362,618 (US$ 5181) from the minister’s wife.
Meanwhile, in his last press briefing, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister M. Morshed Khan admitted that his diplomacy failed miserably in attaining economic benefit for Bangladesh.
