October 24, 2006 (Press Release) -- Alan M. Thornton, an editorial, commercial and documentary photographer
of Lowell MA. was awarded Eight Honorable Mentions for his work
“Travels Through Turkey”, a color portrait documentary series, and his
“Kurdish Portraits”, a series of large format sepia toned portraits of various
Kurdish villagers of South Eastern Turkey. The merits were in the
Professional categories of: Travel-Tourism, Fine Art, Advertising, Editorial,
People, Self Promotion and Photo Essay.

About the Project:
Alan traveled to South Eastern Turkey in the summer of 2005 to work on a
personal photography project capturing the nomadic Kurdish culture in the
mountains that overlook Iran and Iraq. He traveled alone to Van, Turkey
with his digital camera as well as his 4”x5” Graflex camera and Polaroid film
to create a series of powerful portraits of the people that he met there.

The portrait and travel imagery are currently part of a lecture series and
print exhibit that has been displayed in open hall lectures and art exhibits
in New Mexico, Western Massachusetts, and Vermont. Aside from the sale of
the fine art prints, Alan is also pursuing funding and sponsorship to continue
his research and photography of the Kurdish culture in Turkey, Iraq and Iran.
His goal is to generate a library of portrait images and biographical
information to be made into an archive for the exhibit and lectures to help
raise awareness of the slowly disappearing and often marginalized
Kurdish culture.

The “Kurdish Portraits” exhibit is currently on display in the Donald B. Watt
Library at the School for International Training, Brattleboro Vermont.

About Alan:
Alan is the principal of Alan M Thornton Productions, a full service
editorial, commercial and documentary production company. The company
services several publication, annual report, advertising agencies and
corporate clients. Alan recently moved the studio to the growing artistic
downtown of Lowell Massachusetts to expand the companies editorial and
documentary work.
