1-MINUTE RESUME FOR DREW BARRYMORE
The progeny of a legendary show-business family (her grandfather was John Barrymore, her great-aunt was Ethel Barrymore, Steven Spielberg is her godfather), Drew started acting as a baby and gained Hollywood's attention as cute sis Gertie in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. But stardom at such an early age had ugly consequences — by 14 she had attempted suicide once and was recovering from alcohol and cocaine abuse. The early and mid-'90s marked her comeback, with sexually charged roles in Poison Ivy and Batman Forever. Despite some wild behavior (flashing David Letterman; blink-and-you'll-miss-them engagements and marriages to guys like Tom Green; reported on- and off-set tantrums), Barrymore has managed to stay on top of Hollywood's A list with roles opposite Adam Sandler and the Charlie's Angels flicks.
5 Things:
1. She's estranged from her mother, half-sister and half-brother.
2. She and her first husband, barkeep Jeremy Thomas, were married at 5 a.m. in Thomas' bar, The Room; the ceremony was presided over by a clairvoyant minister from a psychic hotline who arrived within half an hour of being paged.
3. The doctor who delivered her was Dr. Paul Fleiss, infamous madam Heidi Fleiss' father.
4. She's an insomniac.
5. She's the godmother to Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain's daughter, Frances Bean.
Quote:
"I love romance. I'm a sucker for it. I love love so much. I'm crazy for it. I'm nutty for it … I ask myself, Do I feel like I hold the bowl of love and go out there in the universe, whether with this person or alone, and have that shield and glow that's incredible? Or do you feel kind of depressive and self-conscious and like you're walking on eggshells?"
— The Daily Mirror, Aug. 27, 1999
