October 28, 2006 (Press Release) --
October, 12, 2006 (LOS ANGELES, CA) – Walls of catchy, melodic vocals, pensive, narrative lyrics, tire-slashing guitars, and an oddly optimistic brand of melancholy are at the heart of Poperratic’s adventurous debut effort Vagus (the wandering nerve.). The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and film composer Jaye Barnes Luckett, ‘Vagus’ shatters perceptions of female musicians in Rock, as well as her own heritage of Rock’n’Roll as an African-American, paying tribute to unsung black rockers like Otis Blackwell, who helped bear life to the genre. “Rock isn’t ‘white’, ‘black’, ‘male’, or ‘female,’ and never has been,” Luckett says, “It’s the music of alienation, the unconventional, and of rebellion against oppressive ideas and thoughts - whether socially institutionalized or completely internal - which keep us from reaching our true potential and Bliss. To get there… you’ve gotta know the rules, to break the rules – to be free, to evolve.”
Indeed, her new album is Intimate, raw, bombastic and bold, with an eclectic display of homages to Classic and Futuristic Pop, Film Music, Mythology, Hip Hop, New Wave, and mid-80s to early 90s Alternative Rock. Fans have already boldly dubbed it as the “Sgt. Pepper of Indie Rock.” Early listeners relate to the album, drawing correlations to The Beatles, Nirvana, Pixies, The Smiths, The Police, The Breeders, and “The Go-Gos… on steroids.” Vagus is a seamless tale, which unfolds akin to a film. In reference to its namesake (the longest nerve in the human body; related to ‘gut feelings,’ taste, hearing, memory, Depression and more), the allegorical Vagus (the wandering nerve.) connects this emotion-connected tissue to the tale of an inquisitive alien, and takes the listener on a continuous, unpredictable journey – from the mysterious opening strains, to the epic grand finale.
With thick layers of instrumentation, harmonies, whiplash-inducing structural turns, and an ear for sophisticated pop poignancy, Los Angeles-based Luckett and co-producer, engineer, and mixer David “D-Lo” Lopez (Ice Cube, Beyonce Knowles, Ludacris) have crafted a raw, emotional,
hook-laden, story-telling rock album, leaving casual listeners slack-jawed; eager for repeat visits, to unearth additional layers of Vagus’ mysteries and truisms. Though a dark, brooding atmosphere looms overhead; underlying, is a bright, satisfying ocean of optimism; complex and imperfect as Luckett believes is an honest statement – a testament to the Human Experience.
