The Basics: For more than 20 years, Father Oliver O'Grady raped hundreds of children — ranging in age from 9 months to midteens — at the various parishes the Catholic Church assigned him to in central California. This documentary details the church's cover-up of that situation and provides interviews with adult victims and the elderly O'Grady.
What's the Deal? I was raised Baptist, so the whole priest-gets-obeyed-at-all-times thing shown here is a really surprising, really alien part of Catholic Church culture for me. These guys pretty much have absolute authority wherever they get installed; they do as they please, and they protect each other like the Mafia (a charge stated in the movie). Keeping their images intact is actually more important than protecting innocent children. Even devout Catholics are going to be grossed out and enraged by the things they see about their church in this film. The Da Vinci Code's basically The Sound of Music compared to this.
Mind-Blowing Statistic and Mind-Blowing Nonsense: One in 10 priests, according to the film, has sexually abused children in his parish. And the church's response to this? To crack down on gay priests. Because everyone knows that homosexuality and pedophilia are the same thing, right?
Testimonials: Adults who were abused by O'Grady go into shaken detail about their experiences with him. Then O'Grady explains his own version of the events, calmly claiming that he "loved" the kids and displaying no evidence that he even understands the horror of his crimes.
Where He Is Now: In exile in his home country of Ireland, receiving a church annuity.
