Math teacher Ms. Maronda Hastie, group leader and sponsor of the travel club, and science teacher Ms. Brazilia Bilal take a group of 15 to 25 students, parents, and teachers at McNair High School to discover the magic of Costa Rica. The nine-day excursion will take place during the 2007 spring vacation with EF educational tour company.
Ms. Hastie said, “I’d like my students to know more about their world—the culture, the people, and the languages of other countries. I remember the difference my teachers made when they took us on field trips and to other cities. Now that I am a teacher, I take my students on as many fieldtrips as I can. EF Tours allows me to take our field experiences to the next level. Many of our students dream about going to other countries so thanks to EF Tours, it is now a reality! ”
Ms. Bilal said, “Giving students the opportunity to partake in an ecological expedition will diversify their views of the ecosystems of the world. It will afford them the chance to experience first hand the adventures of visiting a rainforest, a biological station, and observing over a hundred different animal species. This is an excellent educational opportunity that our students will remember for a lifetime!”
During our nine-day tour, we will visit many of Costa Rica’s most famous landmarks, such as La Fortuna, the most spectacular waterfall, to Sarapiqui, a hotspot for bird-watching. We will also watch the Poas Volcano in action, whitewater raft along a picturesque river, and trek through La Selva Biological Station, boasting 114 animal species. The white-sand beaches of Cahuita National Park and the Latin vibe of Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast add up to a very colorful trip. “I want to travel the world and see it for myself,” said 15 year old Aisha Veasley, a student in Ms. Bilal’s Biology class. “I read about the rainforest and beautiful waterfalls, and now I have a chance to experience Costa Rica for myself. I am doing everything I can to raise enough money for this trip.”
Currently the students have sponsor packages to help with fund raising. The travel club will work as a group or individuals can work for potential sponsors based on the amount of money donated. They also sell concessions before and after school.
