November 6, 2006 (Press Release) --
After a detour through the Big Apple, country music's most famous gala is returning to Music City.
Last November, the Country Music Association held its awards show in New York City. This year, the 40th annual CMA awards show will be broadcast live from Nashville's Gaylord Entertainment Center at 7 p.m. Monday on WLS-Channel 7.
Superstar duo Brooks & Dunn will serve as hosts for the third time. This means that Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn will have a short walk to the podium if they do win, which seems highly likely.
Brooks & Dunn are tied with Brad Paisley as this year's most-nominated act, racking up six nominations. Both acts are up for the highest honor, entertainer of the year, and they face tough competition from Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban.
The show's temporary relocation to New York in 2005 was harshly criticized by some country music purists, but CMA Chief Operating Officer Tammy Genovese has no doubt that it was a smart move.
"We were the highest-rated music awards show on the air in that television season last year, even above the Grammys,'' Genovese said during a telephone interview. "Being in New York City helped us hit those ratings. There is so much interest in our business right now because we were able to increase our visibility by being in New York. People who didn't know what was going on in country music were able to see what a big business we are and who we really are. We increased our visibility across the board, and that's coming back to us tenfold right now.''
Performers at the ready
This year's telecast will have about 20 musical performances, including songs from Dierks Bentley, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride and Carrie Underwood.
Bentley won the Horizon award in 2005, which is an honor acknowledging an act that has had a breakthrough year. Thanks to hits like "Settle for a Slowdown,'' Bentley is now vying for top male vocalist, a category that also includes Chesney, Jackson, Paisley and Urban.
"I'm just lucky to be in there,'' Bentley said via telephone while on tour in Winston-Salem, N.C. "Considering that George Strait and Tim McGraw are not in that category, for me to be in there is kind of a victory in itself. I don't really expect to win that award, but it's nice to be recognized.''
In recent years, the CMA show has reflected the growing trend of veteran rock acts collaborating with country musicians. Bon Jovi is nominated for musical event of the year for "Who Says You Can't Go Home,'' a duet with Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. Brooks & Dunn got a nod in the same category for "Building Bridges,'' which has guest vocals by rocker Sheryl Crow and country crooner Vince Gill.
