Carpentersville, Illinois - The Fox Valley Citizens for Legal Immigration will host a News Conference at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, November 15, 2006 to present "a Challenge" to Village President, Bill Sarto.
As widely reported at the end of October, Carpentersville Mayor Sarto made a single phonecall to cancel a League of Women Voters planned public discussion on the national problem of illegal immigration.
"We don't need public forums that will pit one against the other, neighbor against neighbor. Any conversation in a public setting will do nothing but stir up and inflame those who hold strong views on both sides of the issue," he said. "It would be similar to having the Nazi Party and the Jewish Defense League get together to discuss if the Holocaust really happened."
The people of Carpentersville were shocked and incensed. Local news reporters agreed Sarto went too far:
"Those who wish to thwart meaningful debate on this topic and thus impose their will on the nation absent any organized objection are no doubt pleased at Sarto's action," wrote Mike Bailey of The Courier News. "The message he has sent is that lawfully elected officials can be intimidated into silence."
"And indeed, every free election does exactly what Sarto so abhors -- it pits people and views against each other in a public setting," agreed The Daily Herald's Chris Bailey. "But Big Brother Bill Sarto knows best."
We ask: Whatever happened to the First Amendment? Or is it only at the whim of those who rule? This is censorship in its most blatant form.
We, the people of the Village of Carpentersville, will not stand silent on this matter. Having organized as the Fox Valley Citizens for Legal Immigration, a legal not-for-profit organization, we will issue a challenge to our Mayor, Bill Sarto, to be announced during the upcoming News Conference.
