November 9, 2006 (Press Release) --
It's no accident Britney Spears chose Monday as the day to ditch Kevin Federline.
The couple's prenuptial agreement decrees Spears would have had to part with another sizable alimony payment -- if her marriage to Federline entered a third year. As reported by foxnews.com, Nov. 6 was the deadline for a 30-day grace period after her Oct. 6 wedding anniversary. The couple tied the knot on Oct. 6, 2004.
A close Spears associate who requested anonymity told the Sun-Times a third year of marriage -- even the beginning of that third year -- potentially would have cost the singer another $5 million, based on a sliding scale of alimony increases for every year the marriage remained intact.
On Wednesday, Federline challenged his wife's request for custody of their two children. He filed court papers seeking sole custody and spousal support.
''Kevin is prepared to go the distance in order to do what he feels is necessary to protect and safeguard the children and will not be intimidated or dissuaded from pursuit of those goals,'' said Michael Sands, a spokesman for his lawyer.
Spears' inner circle -- including mother Lynne and other management team members -- has been pushing for this divorce. In their eyes -- and now Britney's -- Federline's constant partying, spending and rumored philandering all justified Spears bailing out before it cost her even more.
