Modern Nurse Magazine, leading online nursing magazine for the new generation nurse, releases its November issue featuring the portrayal of nurses in the media.
Nurses have long criticized the way they have been represented in media. In movies and TV shows, nurses usually appear as servants, temptresses and mere bubblehead accessories in medical settings.
ABC’s daytime drama ‘General Hospital’ takes on a different approach. They recently introduced a new character under the name of Epiphany Johnson, and her impact on the show’s fans has been quite significant.
Far from how nurses are usually portrayed, Epiphany is strong, confident, experienced and slightly dominant. She interacts with physicians and others as an equal member of the care team and takes risks on behalf of her patients. She voices her opinion, and it is valued, listened to, and respected.
Actress Sonya Eddy plays the role of Epiphany Johnson. Interestingly, Sonya is a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) herself. She admits that this contributes to her convincing and extraordinary depiction of Epiphany.
Robert Guza, Jr., Emmy-award winning writer of the show says that Epiphany Johnson and Sonya Eddy are in for the long haul. The character will continue to give both flavor and truthfulness to the script and in the process, keep the integrity of nurses intact.
