November 11, 2006 (Press Release) --
Scorsese Scores a Deal
Stars such as Jim Carrey may not be inspiring the studios to pony up big bucks. But on the heels of The Departed, Martin Scorsese's most financially successful release ever, with more than $150 million in worldwide ticket sales in its first five weeks of release, the director has gotten the Paramount suits to loosen the purse strings a touch. Scorsese has signed a four-year first-look deal with the studio, which will include another large-scale blockbuster flick and the Rolling Stones documentary Scorsese is currently filming. The hefty deal also gives Paramount the right to half ownership and distribution rights on any flick Scorsese makes for another studio. Other projects believed to be on Scorsese's future slate: The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and a doc on controversial Oscar-winning filmmaker Elia Kazan.
Depp: The People's Choice
The people, the People's Choice Awards people, have spoken, and Johnny Depp is their choice as Hollywood's leading man. He snagged a field-leading three nominations for this year's fan-chosen awards. Depp received nods for favorite male movie star, best male action star and, with Pirates of the Caribbean co-star Keira Knightley, shared a nomination for favorite on-screen match-up. Other multiple nominees for the Jan. 9 awards: The Break-Up co-stars and otherwise broken-up couple Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, who shared a nod for favorite on-screen match-up and received solo nods for favorite female movie star and favorite leading man, and Oscar winner Halle Berry, who was nominated for favorite female movie star and favorite female action star for her role in X-Men: The Last Stand. … The people have also spoken about their choice for governor of California, and the winner once again was incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Republican actor handily defeated his Democratic challenger: "I love doing sequels," Schwarzenegger said. "But this, without any doubt, is my favorite sequel."
