November 11, 2006 (Press Release) --
The Radio City Rockettes are returning to the Windy City on a new kick -- five to be exact -- in their "Christmas Spectacular," opening tonight at the Rosemont Theatre.
"We're always trying to keep the show fresh and present new Rockette and ensemble numbers to get people wanting to come back [year after year]," said Julie Branam, director of the show.
"The Radio City Christmas Spectacular" is exactly that -- spectacular. A colorful and glittery holiday staple in New York since 1933, and a favorite among Chicago area theatergoers since its debut at the Rosemont Theatre in 1997, the production features a cast and crew of nearly 100 people.
The show, suitable for kids, features endearing holiday entertainment as teddy bears dance, wooden soldiers march, tiny snowmen shimmy and reindeer fly. Of course, the stars of the show remain the Rockettes, a precision dance troupe known for fancy footwork and eye-high kicks. In addition to the new numbers, the production will include traditional favorites such as the "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" and "The Living Nativity."
"Although I love all the numbers, I have a couple of favorites among the new acts," Branam said. One of them is "The Twelve Days of Christmas."
"It's a tap-dance extravaganza -- a long tour de force where the Rockettes become seven swans [a-swimming], 12 drummers [drumming], etc.," Branam said.
Other new numbers include "Sleighride," in which the Rockettes join Santa for a brisk journey from the North Pole to Chicago, and "Christmas Dreams," which brings the hopes, dreams and wishes of the holiday season to life. Other new numbers are "I'm There," which answers the age-old question of how Santa Claus can be in so many places at one time on one night, and Mrs. Claus' delightful "Everyone's Waitin' for the Man with the Bag."
Rockette Melissa Zaremba, who calls Chicago home, likes "Sleighride."
"It's a jazz number where we become Santa's reindeer and get all geared up for Christmas," said Zaremba, 27, who is in her third season with the Rockettes.
"An interesting new number is 'I'm There,'" she said. "We basically do an entire routine where we explain everything at once. It's a fun number. Although I don't want to give too much away, let's just say there are lots and lots of Santas -- they keep multiplying."
