After searching out maternity clothing for their stores, partners and of mothers of six, Amber Krueger and Summer McFarland, were unable to locate any company that could provide stylish clothing in a cut that flattered a fuller size. “I felt embarrassed when a mother walked in, barely a size 14, who couldn’t fit any of the new and trendy styles we carried.” McFarland states, “I consider a 12/14 normal, not plus size!” And it isn’t just a local problem. Searching for nursing apparel, which are tops, sweaters and dresses specially designed with openings for discreet breastfeeding, was just as much of a challenge for the two. “Going into most stores, you would think that you have to wear a tent or design your own clothing if you don’t fit into the teeny tiny molds made by designers,” says Krueger. Finding clothing that fits really isn’t a plus size versus regular sizing issue, either. In a nursing top, a mother who usually could fit a size twelve but has larger than a DD-cup can have problems with nursing openings, requiring her to buy one or two sizes larger. This makes her a 1X, which is hard to find.
Combining their experience, style and color preferences, the two mothers were able to develop a simple, year-round line that they are sure will accommodate everyone. “We have a little bit of everything, including cuts that allow you to wear a shirt from pregnancy into breastfeeding, and jeans that adjust on the inside so you can wear them postpartum and no one will know.” says McFarland. “You can mix shirts with jeans or slacks and many items can go from work to weekend and back again and again. Versatility and quality are very important to us.”
