November 15, 2006 (Press Release) --
LAND GRABBING IN NAME OF POWER GENERATION
On the borders of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, near Ghaziabad stands a small town Dadri whose lands owned by agricultural farmers was bought by the younger scion of the Ambani family, Anil , off the UP government some three years ago .
The proposed objective was to set up a plant for electricity generation for the electricity hungry Western parts of the state.
One may do well to recall that Mr Anil Ambani and Samajwadi Party leader Mr Amar Singh are sworn brothers and the deal was smoothened by the family like relations of both, at a time when UP was ruled by Mr Amar Singh’s leader and mentor Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The question arresting the public mind as of now is when will the --- acres of prime agricultural land be either utilized for the purpose – setting up the power from gas plant-- by Mr Anil Ambani’s conglomerate or returned to the lawful owners of the land ? The matter has been taken to court by Mr Anil Ambani in a bid to save and underline his ownership of the land.
The case filed by Mr Ambani junior against his elder brother’s group Reliance Industries Limited for supply of gas is considered laughable because there is no power plant that could use the gas.
Despite being in possession of the extremely fertile land that could have yielded ---- quintals of food grain for the needy farmer in every harvest season, and despite all the wherewithal the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group has at its disposal, not even one major contract has been signed, no equipment or design or engineering work has been initiated towards infrastructure development at the site.
The only thing that has been achieved in the last --- years is that ADAG has been able to corner precious land for a token payment, all because of his proximity with the current ruling party in Uttar Pradesh.
It is crystal clear to all that ADA Group is in a major mess with the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh falling due in February 07. The political climate in the state is not favouring Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi. It is very likely that this Mr Yadav will be a victim of the incumbency factor, what with the Hindu majority population unwilling to give Mr Yadav’s secular credentials the short shrift.
Now, that leaves Mr Anil Ambani teetering on the sharp, thin edge of the blade. He and his group are now desperate to ensure that the land he managed to acquire, for what can safely be described as a pittance, from being taken away by the next incumbent government, which is most likely to happen.
Observers say that the legal team in ADAG will as a next step choose to move Bombay High Court for this case, after having their earlier case against the Government of India dismissed on the airport modernization issue. Supreme Court has in fact rejected the ADAG plea in the matter in the very recent past.
