November 16, 2006 (Press Release) --
Orem, UT – November 17, 2006 – For the past week, tents and camp chairs lined the sidewalks at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target and other electronic retail stores. Shoppers huddled together in the frigid November weather, willing to sit in the cold day and night for just one thing – PLAYSTATION 3.
What some call “the ultimate gaming machine,” Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3), hits shelves today, but why all the hype? With the latest hyper-powered technology, the new HDTV ready PS3 is sure to be this year’s gift-of-gifts for the holidays, even more so than the new TMX Elmo. But that’s not the only reason people are waiting in line.
“I’m turning right around and selling mine on eBay,” says Billy Cannady, who will have waited nearly 42 hours to make his purchase. “Hopefully it pays off!”
And it will, according to research conducted by HammerTap, an eBay market research provider. Before the gaming system has even been released, more than 1,800 pre-sale PS3s have been sold on eBay, bringing in nearly $3 million.
“I hope to make $800 on mine,” Cannady says. According to HammerTap research, each system averages $1,500 on eBay, a profit of $900 from the $600 shelve price.
“Re-sellers of the new PLAYSTATION 3 can expect to make a hefty profit,” says Jen Cano, spokesperson for HammerTap. “The research shows incredible markups already, and once the game is no longer on the shelves, HammerTap data supports theories that prices will skyrocket.”
For some, PS3 is sure to bring in some extra holiday cash, and for others, like eBay seller calibertech – who sold the first PS3 on eBay for $14,900 – it may be a little more.
