November 19, 2006 (Press Release) --
Even when you're Denzel Washington, you still need a little inspiration in your life. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native and son of a minister remembers the day that changed his entire life. "I was about 8 years old and I was hanging out at my local Boys & Girls Club," Washington says. "One of the adults sat me down and said, 'D, with your smarts, you can do anything you want to do in life. Never forget it.' "
Washington shakes his handsome mug on a cool fall day at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles: "You never know in life how your words will have a beautiful influence in the life of someone else. Words are free. Try to use them to help just one person today.
"It is our job in life to change the life of others in the most positive way," he says.
Washington is on an inspirational kick because he has a new book, A Hand to Guide Me (Meredith Books, $24.95),filled with can-do stories from other luminaries, including Bill Clinton and Whoopi Goldberg. He also stars in the new film "Deja Vu" in which he plays an ATF agent who falls in love with a gorgeous dead girl (newcomer Paula Patton). He figures out through a secret government program that he can go back in time and actually save her life and thwart a terrorist attack.
At age 52, the guy called D is tremendously popular. His co-star Patton tells FLUFF, "When we filmed outside a girls school in New Orleans, our car was surrounded by little girls screaming, 'Give us a D! Give us an E! Give us a N! Give us a Z! Give us an E! Give us an L!' "
The book started as a tribute to the Boys & Girls Club because I'm their spokesperson for many years. It's a celebration of true role models. The people behind the people. It has famous folks and successful people.
