November 21, 2006 (Press Release) --
One of the major barriers to Linux adoption by consumers is the lack of computer resellers offering the advanced, reliable operating system
pre-installed. While most people can easily find resellers offering Mac and Windows pre-installed on computers, finding a retailer that offers Linux is more challenging. LXer, a Linux news website, launched its database featuring vendors who offer desktop and notebook computers with Linux pre-installed earlier this week to an enthusiastic audience. Linux has been slowly catching on with private computer users, and more vendors are beginning to support it.
The Pre-Installed Linux database makes it easy for non-technical users to locate vendors, determine which Linux distributions they offer, and determine whether the vendor provides support. Users can filter on desktops or notebooks, and advanced users can even filter on vendors offering no operating system at all. Major retailers, such as Fry's Electronics, K-Mart and Wal-Mart, offer Linspire computers, but the database includes around 100 vendors world-wide who offer Linux computers.
The database includes vendors from North America, the European Union, and Australia. Many vendors offer limited support for Linux and users can also obtain free support from an active volunteer support community. Additionally, the database alerts users to whether a vendor's hardware options include the so-called 'Microsoft Tax'. For example, some vendors sell computers with no operating system at all, but still charge more than similarly equipped computers with Windows installed.
Computers with Linux pre-installed offer significant cost-savings and security advantages. There is no need to purchase additional software. Linux systems typically include OpenOffice.org, an office suite compatible with Microsoft Office, the popular Firefox web browser, e-mail, graphics and multimedia capabilities. Linux systems are not susceptible to the plethora of Windows viruses. Linux and most applications that run on it are licensed under liberal terms that empower users to solve their own problems and allow sharing.
