November 23, 2006 (Press Release) --
You get one big, fantastical freak show of a movie, starring Jack Black.
"Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny" is filled with sophomoric humor. It starts and ends -- if you make it through the credits -- with a fart gag. There's a lot of pot smoking and penis jokes in between.
It's a buddy movie and a road movie, part musical/part fantasy; a quest turns into a caper; there's a car chase, and it ends in a showdown with the devil.
The opening sequence alone -- a mini-rock opera featuring hard-rock icons Meat Loaf and Ronnie James Dio as opposing forces in a young boy's world -- is worth the price of admission.
Black is JB, that once-young boy, whose compulsion to rock leads him to Los Angeles, where he meets his destiny in the form of Kyle Gass, a Venice Beach guitar bum whose classical strumming seems to bore passersby but lights a fire in JB, who, on the spot, makes up lyrics to the tunes of Beethoven's "Fur Elise" (calling all former piano students!) and Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik."
Together they form Tenacious D, which actually is a real-life band formed by Black and Gass in the mid-'90s. Their cult following picked up steam with a short-lived HBO series and a self-titled debut album.

What do you get when you cross a couple of chubby guitar slingers with Satan, Sasquatch and a snaggle-toothed scary dude in a diner?
