Move over tequila, there is a new Latin spirit coming to America. The last time a new category of distilled spirits hit the US coast was more than 50 years ago, with the help of the US Cachaca Trade Council all is about to change.
Cachaca, pronounced (Ka sha sá), is Brazil’s national spirit. Just like bourbon can only be made in America, tequila in Mexico and grappa in Italy, Brazilian Cachaca can only be produced in Brazil. What sets it apart from other national spirits is that it is by far the most widely consumed spirit, surpassed only by vodka. Vodka used to come only from the former Soviet Union, but now it seems that you can make a vodka almost anywhere and from almost anything.
This is where Cachaca is ready to take over the leadership position. Because Cachaca is so widely popular in the rest of the world, current US CTC President Marco Zvanik feels that the US consumer is ready to experience this new spirit. “Unlike other national spirits like uzo and aquavit, Brazilian Cachaca is popular in a wide number of countries and drink combinations. Introducing the US market to this new experience is the role of the US Cachaca Trade Council”, stated Marco Zvanik at this year’s Cachaca World’s Fair in Minais Gerais.
Premium brands of Cachaca are just now being introduced here in the US. Brands like Frisco Fish , Leblon and Cabana are premium brands of Cachaca that can be used instead of rum, vodka and tequila to create a new drink experience. “For many years now, the popularity of Brazilian steakhouses has fueled the growth of Cachaca here in the US. The downside is that most steakhouses use poor quality Cachaca because it is less expensive. These ‘cheaper’ brands tend to be okay for making the Brazilian national cocktail, the caipirinha, but they do not transition well to high end cocktails like margaritas, cosmopolitans and mojitos,” states Mr. Zvanik.
With more than 4,000 different brands of Cachaca currently being produced in Brazil, the US Trade Council has been able to find one exceptional brand and has started supporting the sale, marketing and distribution of Frisco Fish Premium Brand of Cachaca here in the United States. Because the Frisco Fish brand has the support of so many manufacturers in the Brazilian market place, it is being produced with the US consumer in mind. “The typical US consumer of adult beverages has been exposed to many great quality products and has a well educated palate. This requires a Cachaca that has a smooth finish, a clean crisp taste and the ability to mix well with a wide combination of recipes. This is why we are supporting the Frisco Fish brand in every new market.” Frisco Fish is available in both a Silver (clear
