November 25, 2006 (Press Release) --
Effective 16 November 2006, the BBC, that self-styled bastion of ‘free speech’, decided that posters on its Today MB would no longer be allowed to chose their own subjects. These would instead be chosen by the Today editorial team to 'better reflect 'the Today audience. One result has been a drop in the number of subjects, from perhaps 20 new subjects each day with 8-900 postings prior to 16 November to a total of 26 up to 24 November with about 350 posts per day. Most of the previous posters have left, and many of those that chose to stay constantly berate the BBC and the MB for its decision, with the majority of current postings on this subject. One of the 26 threads since 16 November concerned the musings of an obscure 80’s rock band on a No Music Day!
Prior to 16 November the posters were mostly polarised between sycophantic Labour supporters, possibly paid apparatchiks, and those who responded to them, often vituperatively, on subjects such as the ‘achievements’ of the current Government, law and order, combating terrorists, the Iraq invasion, ‘racism’ and uncontrolled immigration into the UK. The BBC permitted this obvious propaganda by the apparatchiks at the time. This led to the often hilarious situation where the Labour apparatchiks accused anyone who opposed Government policy on terrorism or the Iraq war of supporting terrorism and those who opposed the current uncontrolled immigration at the same time of ‘racism’, despite the majority concern being with Eastern European immigration and its potential effect on social services in the UK. Virtually all opponents of the official Government view were indiscriminately classed as subversives/BNP members.
They were joined by those in the middle ground with an axe to grind who, without reading the posts described as ‘racist’, pumped up the volume leading to further angered responses from the indignant ‘racists’, and by those whose sanity has been questioned elsewhere.
Since 16 November, the Today MB has been systematically culled of much of its history, and some of the Labour apparatchik long-term posters changed their names to render responses to their threads or quotations meaningless. Jolly good sabotage. A few days ago opponents of the change noticed a strange new phenomenon. Several new posters appeared bearing addresses believed to be within the series allocated to BBC moderators themselves. These almost to a man/woman agreed with the sentiments expressed by the BBC and the Today editors and did not appear to be subject to a lengthy period of pre-moderation before their posts appeared, like other new members.
And despite proclaiming the ‘new’ MB on the Today programme, the editors are reduced to posting ‘Good night and thank you’ posts to inflate the numbers.
So much for free speech from our ‘public service’ (and certainly public paid-for) broadcaster and the relevance of the MB to Today’s audience!

The BBC Today MB format has been changed so as to stop posters starting their own threads. Instead they must respond to threads planted by the Today editors. Most posters have left.
