November 28, 2006 (Press Release) --
“Anyone still unconvinced by the myriad scientific or ethical arguments as to why the world's rainforests and their extraordinary diversity are worth
protecting, may yet be persuaded by the exquisite beauty represented in this book” STING
Rainforest, from DK publishing (http://www.dk.com/ ), is the stunning result of half a lifetime’s work by Swiss photographer Thomas Marent. First inspired
by a visit to the rainforest in Australia when he was 24, Marent has spent the ensuing 16 years exploring and photographing the world’s rainforests. Funding
himself with a selection of casual jobs he has crossed 5 continents, from Argentina to Papua New Guinea, and has captured mesmerizing images of these
beautiful yet fast-disappearing habitats and their inhabitants, some of which have never been photographed before.
Publishers DK have marked the publication of Rainforest by commissioning online marketeers Zinio to create an interactive Rainforest DK sampler
(http://www.zinio.com/express2?issue=176441186 ). The sampler is designed as a virtual book which enables you to take a look inside, turn the pages online
and buy Rainforest at a preferential 20% discount. The user can then click through to the DK rainforest (http://www.dk.com/rainforest ) website which
features a Rainforest photo gallery (http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/static/html/features/rainforest/intro.html ), the opportunity to submit photos to
the DK Nature Photo Gallery (http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/static/html/features/rainforest/competition.html ) on flickr.com and listen to an
interview with Thomas Marent.
Endorsed by the Rainforest Foundation and supported by Sting, Rainforest also carries an ecological message. A donation from every copy sold goes to the
Rainforest Foundation to help preserve our rainforests. Rainforest is printed on paper from sustainable European forests and no wood from rainforest areas
was used in its manufacture.
“Rainforests are the greatest treasure houses of natural riches on earth and I think it is tragic that we are losing them just as we are beginning to
appreciate their true value. Rainforest is my photographic journey through these astounding and fragile places.” Thomas Marent
Note to editors:
DK and The Proud Gallery are delighted to announce, sponsored by Nikon, ‘Rainforest: A photographic journey’ by Thomas Marent from October 6th – January
14th at The Proud Gallery, Camden.
Thomas Marent is available for interview.
