London recently hosted the world’s biggest blind date, bringing together hundreds of couples in a distinctly hi-tech way – through SMS text messaging.

November 07, 2006 -- London’s Leicester Square was home recently to the world’s biggest blind date, bringing together hundreds of couples using a distinctly hi-tech Cupid’s arrow – SMS text messaging. Organised by dating service Smartdater and powered by txtNation’s leading mobile technology platform, mFUSION, the event was the first of its kind and on this scale to use the ubiquitous text message as a way to find love on an otherwise chilly day in Central London.
Featured on ITV’s London Tonight bulletin, the event attracted the attention of over 600 men and women across the capital and beyond. With mobile phones enjoying over 100% penetration in the UK, the sign-up process for the big date was particularly accessible, personal and secure. By sending a simple text, individuals register their interest before Smartdater matches couples together, informing them of their date by a text on the day.
The event was hosted by the Movies and Dates company, specialists in bringing like-minded people together to watch films and to drink and relax at an exclusive after-party. Targeted at all types of relationships, there was the potential for serious relationships and casual friendships to develop on the night. Judging by the hundreds of people who joined in, the event was a great success.
It suitably coincided with the premiere of new British comedy “Scenes of a Sexual Nature”, which stars Ewan McGregor, Catherine Tate and Oscar®-nominee Sophie Okonedo.
