December 8, 2006 (Press Release) --
Dr. Muhammed Yunus has left Dhaka on Friday afternoon for Norway’s capital Oslo leading a team of 77 members to take the Nobel Peace Prize 2006. Dr. Yunus is accompanied by his second wife, daughter, and brother, members of family and some chosen members and borrowers of his Grameen Bank. Although Dr. Yunus and his family members traveled by first class ticket, other members of the organization had to travel by Economy Class. In Oslo also, the team will stay in a cheaper hotel, while Yunus and his family will be staying with Oslo Grand Hotel. According to sources, only airline fare for the entire team will cross US$ 200,000 while the cost of accommodation etc., will cross US$ 250,000 totaling US$ 450,000. The entire cost will be deducted from the total amount of prize money. The source further adds saying that, the Oslo tour might be the only reconciliation of the poor borrowers and staffs of Grameen Bank, while the major portion of the total amount might go in Yunus’ pocket. Prior to departure, the entire team was given a four week orientation course to properly address any question from foreign press. They had been strictly instructed not to give any negative information on the activities of Grameen Bank. Yunus’ own brother Muhammed jahangir conducted the orientation course.
It was already alleged that, Grameen Bank takes more than 32 percent interest on the loan amount, while there are series of instances of serious repression on those borrowers, who fail to repay the interests and capital money in schedule. A large number of Bangladeshis were surprised to witness that a blood sucker like Yunus was given Nobel Peace Prize, which has already damaged the image of this prize itself.
Dr. Yunus, proclaiming to be the Dead of the Economic Department of a Bangladeshi University, was actually a lecturer for a couple of years, before he entered the most profitable business of earning interests in the name of serving the poor. According to sources, Yunus was never promoted to the rank of a professor, and there is no question of him in becoming the Head of the Economic Faculty.
During prize ceremony, Dr. Yunus’ first Russian wife and his daughter Monika Yunus will also be present. Monika will perform in a cultural program organized after the prize giving ceremony.
