The Basics: Add it to the growing heap of Christian contempo-movies that express nothing beyond what their target market wants, offer no fresh insight and, most irreverently of all, no inspiration.
What's the Deal? I'm trying to figure out what director Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown, Thirteen) had in mind. Is it about how tough it is to be a teen mom? Is it supposed to be bitter commentary on the historical religious oppression of women? Or is it really just a moneygrubbing religious movie designed to become a holiday staple?
Stuff They Forgot to Put in This Movie: A stop-motion little drummer boy, Nestor the Long-Eared Donkey, talking animals, opera-singing Wise Men and a baby named Brian being born in the barn next door.
And No, I'm Not an Atheist: Check out the groovy film version of Jesus Christ Superstar or Johnny Cash's oddball Gospel Road movie from 1973. I also dig Thérèse, the 1986 minimalist drama about St. Therese of Lisieux, and Robert Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest. So there.
