December 13, 2006 (Press Release) --
On November 29, 2006, a very rare surgery for Total Knee Replacement was
performed at RLKC Hospital and Metro Heart Institute in New Delhi. What made
this surgery so rare was the fact that the patient was a hemophiliac.
Hemophiliacs are patients with a deficiency of Factor VIII in their blood. This
results into serious blood clotting disorders.
Till this operation, it was widely believed that a Total Knee Replacement in a
hemophiliac patient is too complex and risky. Dr. Sanjay Madan and Dr. Mahesh
Suman, both orthopedic surgeons, supported by hematologist Dr. Dinesh Jain
successfully performed this procedure.
Such a major surgery on a Hemophiliac patient was made possible due to the
indigenous availability of Anti-Hemophilic Factor VIII, a critical requirement
for all Hemophiliac patients, from Reliance Life Sciences. In this case of
Total Knee Replacement, 40,000 International Units (IU) of Factor VIII
(HemoRel-A) from Reliance Life Sciences were used by the patient over a period
of nine days.
The patient is recovering very well and awaiting discharge at Dr. Purshottam
Lal’s RLKC Hospital & Metro Heart Institute, thanks to the expertise of the
attending doctors there and the ready availability of HemoRel-A).
This is very significant, considering that until recently plasma proteins
including Factor VIII were totally imported into India. Patients in dire need
of products like Factor VIII faced several problems – dependence on imported
products, uncertainly in supplies, short expiry of imported products and high
price of imported products.
Reliance Life Sciences embarked on indigenous research and development of plasma
proteins and also built a pilot scale facility in Mumbai, compliant to Indian
and international standards (SHO-GMP) for manufacturing these proteins
indigenously. This is the only facility in India for manufacturing plasma
proteins.
Based on these efforts, Reliance Life Science introduced several plasma proteins
– Albumin (AlbuRel), Intravenous Immunoglobulin G (ImmunoRel), Factor VIII
(HemoRel-A), Fibrin sealant (ReliSeal) and Virus inactivated plasma
(ReliPlasma).
Reflecting on the initiative, Mr. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director
said, “Plasma proteins from Reliance Life Sciences meet unmet patient needs in
India and represent the starting point for an exciting growth avenue in
biopharmaceuticals.”
Plasma protein products from Reliance Life Sciences have been very well received
by the medical community all over India. This is based on a very strong value
proposition, based on catering to unmet patient needs, easy and consistent
availability, 40% lower prices as compared to imported products, long expiry
dates and above all, product safety. Reliance Life Sciences uses Polymerase
Chain Reaction (PCR) screening for viruses at every major stage of production
from raw materials to final product as well as employs viral inactivation
technologies in the manufacturing processes to ensure product safety.
