Burlington, Ontario 2006: Resolutions are made. The intention and desire to achieve is strong. There is a big push out of the start gate and then a slow fizzle. Here’s why New Years Resolutions rarely stick; deep down inside of yourself you don’t believe in them. It’s that simple.
You can have anything you want in life. Whether it’s more money, better health, less stress, greater self-confidence, happiness or fulfilling relationships, it’s all possible if you believe. The key to getting all you want and much more is holding positive, supportive beliefs about yourself and the issues you want to change in your life.
Without positive beliefs, you might achieve your resolutions with some struggle, a lot of striving and not much fun. Most likely you’ll throw your hands up in defeat and revert to old patterns and behaviors, once again re-enforcing the negative beliefs that already have a hold on you.
So this year, New Years Resolution Number ONE is change your beliefs. Root out old, limiting negative beliefs, behaviors and patterns and replace them with positive life enhancing ones. These new beliefs will support you as you move forward in your resolution to work out regularly, eat healthy foods, make more money; spend more time with family and like it!
For example: In 2007 you resolve to start saying “No” more often and take time for yourself. Great resolution, but the problem is deep in your mind consciously and/or subconsciously you’re holding onto beliefs such as: “If I say no, people won’t like me. Doing things for others makes me feel needed, wanted and accepted. If I say no, the job won’t get done properly and then everything will fall apart. I feel guilty when I say no.” Hmmm—doesn’t sound promising for a long term resolution.
How about filling your mind with beliefs such as; “It’s OK to say no. I can do anything I choose. I speak my mind. Other people’s words and thoughts are simply information about them. I love and accept myself just the way I am. I deserve to take time for myself. I deserve to treat myself with the same respect I treat others. Other people will manage if I say no.” WOW, awesome beliefs to support a fabulous resolution.
Whatever the New Years Resolution there is hope. In the words of Zig Ziglar, “You are what you are and you are where you are because of what has gone into yo
