December 14, 2006 (Press Release) --
( Dallas , TEXAS December 14) – The internationally acclaimed Fisk University Jubilee Singers will perform February 17, 2007 at the Christian Chapel Temple of Faith, 14120 Noel Rd. in Dallas . The performance will begin at 3 p.m. The concert, chaired by Barbara Lord Watkins, will benefit Fisk University’s scholarship fund.
Under the direction of Paul Kwami, the Jubilee Singers perform acapella and specialize in Negro spirituals. The group’s most notable alumna is Mandisa Hundley, American Idol finalist.
The Jubilee Singers were established in 1871 to raise funds for then-struggling Fisk University in Nashville, TN. The original nine-member troupe toured the United States as well as Europe raising more than $150,000 for the school. The funds were used to buy the land where the school resides today. Proceeds were also used to build Jubilee Hall, the first permanent structure erected for African American higher education in the United States. Jubilee Hall currently serves as the senior women’s dormitory.
Contrary to popular belief, Nashville was nicknamed “Music City” because of the Jubilee Singers’ heritage, not country music fame.
Today, the ensemble is made up of students from throughout the United States studying a variety of disciplines at Fisk University. The group was featured in the PBS documentary series, The American Experience – Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory and was recently honored with a star on the Walk of Fame in Nashville.
Induction into the Gospel Hall of Fame in 2000, the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the National Arts Club of New York , and a Dove Award for the CD Poor Man Lazarus are just a few of the awards and accolades the Grammy-nominated group has received.
Sponsorship opportunities are available. For additional information regarding the concert, please contact Tobi F. Cox at 214-923-8380 or tobi.cox@verizon.net. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.TicketWeb.com or by calling Vince Leal at 972-989-9410.
