Blue Sky Dry Cleaners - Northern California’s first and only CO2, wet-cleaning service – Named one of “America’s Best Cleaners”
Bay Area’s only certified “green” dry cleaning business sterilizes moldy garments and safely cleans stuffed animals while attracting attention of Silicon Valley clients, others
(Union City, CA) – Less than a year after launching the Bay Area’s only authentically “green” dry cleaning service, Blue Sky Dry Cleaners owner Frank Shaghafi has turned his attention to the lucrative Silicon Valley market – or, more accurately, Silicon Valley has turned its attention to Blue Sky.
Blue Sky Dry Cleaners is northern California’s only 100 percent clean and natural dry cleaning operation, focusing exclusively on CO2 (liquid carbon dioxide) and wet cleaning technologies. The company is the only such enterprise in the world to own and operate three CO2 machines and was certified earlier this year by the Bay Area Green Business Program, making it the only dry cleaning service to receive that distinction. The company was recently named one of America’s Best Cleaners®.
Launched last February, the Union City-based company enjoyed roughly $1 million in revenue in its first five months of service, with corporate clients such as Elephant Pharmacy and several top insurance agencies jumping on the CO2 bandwagon. Now, largely due to recently-inked deals with IDEO (Palo Alto), Texas Instruments (San Jose) and BEA Systems (San Jose), projections have Blue Sky topping $2 million by the end of its first full year (prior to the switchover to CO2, the company typically saw $200-400K in returns). The company’s business, perhaps surprisingly, continues to boom in Silicon Valley; the biggest fish Blue Sky has landed, with some 18,000 employees based at its San Jose headquarters, has been Cisco Systems, Inc.
“They came to me – I didn’t go to them,” said Shaghafi of the high-tech industry’s interest in Blue Sky. “It seems that there’s a new awareness and demand for environmentally sound processes within this sector that we didn’t really anticipate.” After signing its agreement with Blue Sky, said Shaghafi, Cisco hosted a series of on-site “meet-and-greets” where its employees could learn about the CO2 cleaning process, see demonstrations, and ask questions about the new service.
America’s Best Cleaners ® is a national accreditation organization that strives to locate and recognize the best dry cleaning establishments in major metropolitan areas throughout the United States. Blue Sky is one of five California companies to crack the top 30, and the only one to reside in the Bay Area (others are located in Burbank, Los Angeles, Fresno, and Sacramento).
“Pure CO2 and wet cleaning can’t be beat,” says Shaghafi. “There’s no chemical residue, which leaves clothes cleaner, longer-lasting, and virtually risk-free from an environmental and health perspective.”
