11th Annual Performance of
The Black Nutcracker
New York City, December 1, 2006- ……….The Uptown Dance Academy announces the 11th Annual performance of The Black Nutcracker on Saturday, December 23rd at 7:00PM in the Theatre at Hostos College, 149th Street and Grand Concourse.
The Black Nutcracker is a two-hour, African American version, of the classical ballet. The performance encompasses a wide variety of dance disciplines in addition to classical ballet. During the preceding days in December, children from local public schools will have an opportunity to see and enjoy a shorter version of The Black Nutcracker.
The UDA opened its doors to the public in May of 1996 by its founder, Robin Williams. Ms. Williams successfully develops and trains local youths for the professional stage who have never trained before. The UDA offers more performance opportunities and dance disciplines than any other theatrical dance school in New York City thus giving their students an opportunity to perform almost on a weekly basis.
This year, as in past years, the Uptown Dance Academy will honor persons who have exhibited support and encouragement for the performing arts for children. This year’s honorees are: Mr. Hal Jackson of Talented Teens Competition, Mr. Gerald Migdol, Real Estate Entrepreneur, Ms. Betty Parks, owner of Mannas Restaurants, and Senator Elect Bill Perkins.
In addition to the annual performance of The Black Nutcracker, the Academy schedule includes performances of the History of Black Dance during Black History Month and their Multicultural Presentation, which consists of dances from various regions of the world. UDA’s student performers have been featured on the CBS Early Morning Show and the NBC Weekend Today Show. Individual students have also made their mark in supporting roles on and off Broadway.
