From the beginning of the Empire, the Romans invited to eat some friends and they exchanged honey with dates and some other fruits because doing like that they passed the sweet flavor of these things towards the new year so it began sweetly. This old Roman custom was little by little entering in Europe, where with the same adventurous purpose lentils began to be offered as a symbol of economic prosperity. In the Middle Ages, the Catholic church tried to be against these old customs, but it was not able to extirpate these kind of nice atmosphere. The New Year’s Eve dinner, the 31th of December, become a popular date from principles of century XX. Unlike the Christmas Eve dinner, theseone is a rite of governmental function that is celebrated with friends, at home or maybe in some hotel. In Spain, the tradition of welcoming the new year with grapes seems to be dated from 1909. If you want to be awake until the daybreak, Barcelona is the best city to spend this special evening.
The New Years Eve in Barcelona is an explosion of lights, music and people who has arrived from all over the world. The 2006 will say goodbye in the streets of Barcelona with the most centric areas totally jam-packed with people. A lot of people approach to a great clock that is striking twelve. People eat one grape following each bell sound. After it sounds the last one, champagne and hugs for everybody. The streets fill of people and begins one long dawn of celebration.
