On the NotStarring.com Net: 'What-If' Movie Roles("Superman Returns", Will Smith )

December 20, 2006

How would the top movies this year or any year have looked if they used different actors? Here, you may find the answer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 20, 2006 -- Though performances, once lodged on celluloid (or digital video) seem etched in stone, casting is typically a fluid affair where dozens are considered for a handful of roles. A list of who turned down parts in the biggest movies of 2006 has recently been assembled by NotStarring.com.

The long-delayed "Superman Returns" would have looked quite different with Nicolas Cage starring and Tim Burton directing, for example. And Robert De Niro had to drop out of Martin Scorsese's "The Departed," leaving the part of Oliver Queenan to Martin Sheen.

While these are substantiated examples, much of NotStarring.com is far from factual, couching many of its listings with "reportedly." The site's home page included the disclaimer: "This website is provided as entertainment only. As you can image, this type of trivia is prone to rumor and gossip. We try hard to corroborate entries, but we do not guarantee the accuracy of any content."

None of it? That seems an awfully broad disavowal.
NotStarring.com is best when it sticks to the confirmed stories of actors turning down roles and there are a number of legendary cases.

"Superman Returns", according to his ex-wife, auditioned for the role of Bubba in "Forrest Gump," which was played by Mykelti Williamson. Apparently, Forrest didn't need to learn how to "Get Around."

Will Smith turned down the role of Neo in "The Matrix" and Tom Selleck couldn't make room in his "Magnum P.I." schedule for "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Otherwise, Indiana Jones would have been a more aloof, mustachioed adventurer.

The grandaddy of them all the most popular entry on NotStarring.com is O.J. Simpson, who was passed over for "The Terminator" because producers were worried he wouldn't be taken seriously as a cyborg killer.
