December 20, 2006 (Press Release) --
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Francisco, CA (FPR) December 20, 2006 -- Bay Area Native Michael Lee has made gaming history. Last month over the thanksgiving holiday weekend he sold a Silver PS3 game console for $25,000 on Internet auction site myebid.com. The unprecedented price for the game console is the most paid for the system to date and is over 40 times more then Sony Corp.'s retail price of $599.
Sony originally aimed to ship 400,000 PS3 units for its U.S. launch on November 17, but a shortage of supply meant only about half that number of units were sold at retail outlets. The day after launch thousands of PS3's were selling at inflated prices on ebay.com with the average going for around $2,600 but none of those systems for sale were in the silver color.
Lee, who claims to have connections in the gaming industry wont say exactly how he got his hands on the very rare Silver PS3 but it's no secret Sony originally had plans to release the PS3 in 3 different colors: Black, Silver and even a White console. Although it has been reported Sony will sell the silver and white units in the future, at this time only the black PS3 gaming console has been released to the general public.
"it's like I had the golden ticket, or the silver ticket for that matter" Lee commented, "every one wants a Sony PS3 it's the hottest item out but I was the only one with a silver one for sell."
The San Francisco man who bought the silver PS3, identified only by his myebid username "Ira07," told Lee "this is the silver tuna of gaming systems" and that he just had to have this PS3 because of its boomerang shaped controller, he even said he had to draw from a home equity line of credit on his condo to pay for the console.
Lee, who had several other regular black PS3's for sale on the myebid website, says most of the offers he got were for $1,500 to $2,000 and he could of easily sold the rest for another $25K but instead after thinking it over he has decided to give them away to deserving people for the holiday season. "I want to give back a little, I'm not greedy." Lee explained.
The giveaway will be setup via myebid's "make an offer" option. Anyone who would like a chance of getting a free 60GB or 20GB PS3 can go to the website listing and send Lee(who's username is ironically "xbox360") an offer explaining why they or someone they know deserves a PS3. One PS3 will be given away every day starting on Dec. 25(Christmas day) until the last one is given out on Jan. 5, marking one free PS3 given for each of the 12 days of Christmas.
