OUR REVIEW
by Dave White
Who's in It: Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, Robin Wright Penn, Martin Freeman, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, Rafi Gavron
The Basics: Fancy-trousered Law is a successful landscape architect with a chilly, hassled wife, an emotionally disturbed and obsessive daughter and a business that keeps being broken into by the teenage son of a Bosnian woman (Binoche). So he follows the juvenile delinquent back to his little flat, and it makes Law think deep thoughts about his life. He also starts doing the kid's mom.
What's the Deal? OK, so you're rich, you live in an awesome house, you have a really attractive spouse who loves you enough to try to work it out at counseling, you're very good-looking, and you're also having an affair with another very good-looking person. At what point am I supposed to start feeling sorry for you? I realize I just answered a question with another question.
What It's About: Director-writer Anthony Minghella is the Jude Law of this script. He lives in London, and it's an evolving, multicultural place, and so it's all supposed to be about how we connect with and change each other and blabbedy-blah-blah-blah. Meanwhile, the movie is as cold as London. And have you ever been there? The place gets slightly less chilly around July of each year for about 20 minutes. Then it sleets.
Who's Good: Martin Freeman from the U.K. version of The Office lightens it up a bit. The bullish Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) is in it, too, being Eastender-ish.
Who Should See It: Devout Anglophiles, devout Jude Law-o-philes, people who couldn't wait to see The English Patient again.
