Brandywine, MD (December 22, 2006) – The Unity Economic Development Corporation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in Brandywine, MD. Unity’s mission is to “Promote Financial Empowerment and Community-Business Relationships.” Unity operates the HUD Homebuyers Education and Learning Program (HELP), conducts workshops, and provide one-on-one counseling sessions in financial literacy, money management, debt restructuring, foreclosure prevention and topics to prevent mortgage delinquency.
Unity offers several other programs, such as the Digital Empowerment Program, that provides computer and Internet training to Southern Maryland residents, and an annual Martin Luther King Day weekend celebration. Last year’s MLK event was a grand success, with workshops on Monday providing valuable information to over 100 participants.
Unity’s theme for the 2007 MLK, Jr. Celebration is “Building Wealth & Maintaining Your Health.” On Saturday January 13, 2007, Unity will host a Martin Luther King, Jr. Gospel Brunch with the gospel ministry of Rev. Arlene Crawford, the DuVal High School Gospel Choir, a local gospel sensation called “Another Group”, and Preacher Boy from WHUR, to name a few of the guests. The event begins at 10:00 AM will be held at the Union Bethel Intergenerational Center (IGC) located at 3231 Brinkley Road, Temple Hills, Maryland 20748. The Sunday worship services at Union Bethel AME Church will promote the health and wealth theme. Then on the Monday holiday, Unity will provide workshops at the Union Bethel AME Church located at 6810 Floral Park Road, Brandywine, MD 20613. These workshops will educate adults and youth on topics like HIV/AIDS prevention, prostrate cancer, Balancing Work and Family, and diabetes. Lunch will be provided, followed by a Town Hall meeting to engage members of the community in discussions with local politicians and community leaders to effectively address community concerns. Childcare services will be provided for all Monday events.
