December 25, 2006 (Press Release) --
BEST ALBUM: In an artistic collaboration that yielded the best country album of the year, Alan Jackson recruited Alison Krauss to produce and help select material for his disc "Like Red on a Rose.'' This masterpiece sounds like a Krauss solo album but with Jackson handling lead vocals. On this genre-blending gem, elements of pop, blues and modern acoustic music mesh gracefully with Jackson's country sensibility.
BEST LIVE ACT: Back in January, Martina McBride wowed the crowd at the Rosemont Theatre with a sublime set of classic country songs, and then she returned to the Allstate Arena in November for a festive, Christmas-themed show.
MUSIC AND POLITICS: The Dixie Chicks, who are the subject of the documentary "Shut Up & Sing,'' released the platinum-selling "Taking the Long Way,'' which topped the Billboard pop chart. Some folks will never forgive Natalie Maines for her 2003 Bush-bashing remark, but the Chicks obviously still have plenty of supporters.
FOUR PLAY: In an unprecedented move, Vince Gill unleashed "These Days,'' a brilliant, four-disc set of new material. It's a tasty, quadruple-decker sandwich with no fat -- just 43 great songs.
DOUBLE DOSE: Legendary tunesmith Kris Kristofferson put out a fine studio album, "This Old Road,'' and was the subject of a superb tribute disc, "The Pilgrim: A Celebration of Kris Kristofferson.''
OOPS: Faith Hill demonstrated that she is either incredibly arrogant or incredibly stupid (or both) when she was caught on camera at the Country Music Association awards show apparently exclaiming "What!'' when her name was not read as the winner in the top female vocalist category. Sixteen million viewers watched the telecast, and countless others saw the embarrassing clip online at YouTube.
TOP PICKERS: The Grascals' excellent CD "Long List of Heartaches'' helped them win the entertainer of the year honor at the International Bluegrass Music Association awards show. The disc includes a sparkling rendition of Merle Haggard's "You Don't Have Very Far to Go.''
FUNNIEST LYRICS: Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear wrote Carrie Underwood's revenge-fantasy hit single "Before He Cheats,'' which begins, "Right now, he's probably slow dancing with a bleached-blond tramp, and she's probably getting frisky / Right now, he's probably buying her some fruity little drink 'cause she can't shoot whiskey.''
GOING HOLLYWOOD: Country stars continued to migrate to the silver screen as Toby Keith tackled the lead role in "Broken Bridges,'' Tim McGraw starred in "Flicka'' and Reba McEntire provided the voice for a cow in "Charlotte's Web.''
